Australia Health Insurance (Accredited Pathology Laboratories, Approval) Principles 2017
Part 4: categories of premises and the standards of direction, control and supervision (sections 17 and 18) – Australia Health Insurance (Accredited Pathology Laboratories, Approval) Principles 2017

Australia Health Insurance (Accredited Pathology Laboratories, Approval) Principles 2017 17-B: Category B (Branch): a laboratory related by a written arrangement to a GX or GY laboratory, under the same designated person as the related laboratory, with testing supervised by a pathologist from within the pathology network

What does 17-B require?

Premises qualify as B where they comprise a laboratory or co-located laboratories related by an appropriate (written) arrangement to a GX or GY laboratory, are under the direction and control of the same designated person as that related laboratory, and render one or more groups of pathology testing under the supervision of a pathologist, whether or not the designated person, from a laboratory within the pathology network. A B laboratory has no resident pathologist requirement of its own; the network supplies the supervision, which is why the National Pathology Standards attach virtual supervision, annual visit and onsite manager development expectations to B laboratories.
