Premises qualify as GX where they comprise a laboratory or co-located laboratories under the full-time onsite direction and control of a designated person who is a pathologist, and render services in one or more groups of pathology testing under the full-time supervision of a pathologist (the designated person or another) with the relevant scope of practice. Where the groups of testing fall within a pathology discipline with a national workforce shortage (genomics, immunology or chemical pathology) and the laboratory cannot recruit a full-time pathologist with that scope of practice, supervision by a pathologist without that scope is accepted. A recognised national blood service, whether a single laboratory, co-located laboratories or a network, also qualifies as GX where it is under the full-time direction, control and supervision of a pathologist designated person with the relevant scope of practice and renders a limited range of testing under the full-time supervision of such a pathologist. The GX laboratory anchors a pathology network: GY and B laboratories are related to it by appropriate arrangement and sit under its designated person.
