Australia Health Insurance (Accredited Pathology Laboratories, Approval) Principles 2017
Part 4: categories of premises and the standards of direction, control and supervision (sections 17 and 18) – Australia Health Insurance (Accredited Pathology Laboratories, Approval) Principles 2017

Australia Health Insurance (Accredited Pathology Laboratories, Approval) Principles 2017 17-S: Category S (Specialised): a laboratory under the full-time direction, control and supervision of a non-pathologist specialist medical practitioner, rendering a limited range of testing for a target population or of a specialised nature within that practitioner's scope, including its branch, the workforce-shortage variant and the S(FC) fertility control laboratory

What does 17-S require?

Four kinds of premises qualify as S. First, a laboratory under the full-time direction, control and supervision of a designated person who is a medical practitioner with a specialised scope of practice and not a pathologist, rendering a limited range of testing for a target patient population or of a specialised nature, restricted to the field of testing directly related to that practitioner's scope. Second, a laboratory operating as a branch of such a laboratory under the direction, control and supervision of its designated person (the SB laboratory of the National Pathology Standards). Third, a laboratory under the full-time direction, control and supervision of a non-pathologist medical practitioner designated person rendering a limited range of testing, for a target population or of a specialised nature, in one or more pathology disciplines with a national workforce shortage. Fourth, an S(FC) laboratory under a non-pathologist specialist medical practitioner designated person, rendering a limited range of testing restricted to fertility control testing under that person's full-time supervision. The category depends on the test range staying tied to the designated person's specialised scope; a wider menu calls for GX status.
