Unless the Code expressly permits it, food for sale does not contain as an ingredient or component a substance used as a food additive, nutritive substance or processing aid; in Australia any detectable agvet chemical or its metabolite or degradation product; a prohibited or restricted plant or fungus or coca bush; a novel food (retail sale); a cell-cultured food; a GM food; an irradiated food; kava; raw apricot kernels; or, for retail sale, caffeine from any source. Substances present by natural occurrence are exempt (caffeine from cocoa, chocolate, coffee or tea is natural; added caffeine and caffeine from guarana extract are not). Permissions are in Standards 1.3.1, 1.3.2, 1.3.3, 1.4.2, 1.4.4, 1.5.1 to 1.5.3, 2.6.2, 2.6.3 and 2.9.1 to 2.9.5.
