Parts 8 and 9 Boarding and allocated space: boarding points, boarding devices, removeable gangways, request signals, loading zones, taxi ranks, parking, allocated spaces – Australia Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport 2002

Australia Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport 2002 9.7: Allocated space management: consolidate spaces where possible for larger mobility aids without compromising the access paths or manoeuvring areas to each; other uses allowed only when the space is not needed by a mobility aid user; the floor marked with the international symbol of accessibility and a flush 25 mm contrasting outline; on buses, trams and light rail the space must contain forward and sideways movement of the aid

What does 9.7 require?

Where possible, allocated spaces on buses (other than dedicated school buses), ferries, trains, trams and light rail are to be consolidated so larger mobility aids can be accommodated, provided the access path to and the manoeuvring area for each space are not compromised. An allocated space may be used for other purposes, such as a fold-down seat, when no passenger in a wheelchair or similar aid needs it. On buses, trains, trams and light rail the floor of each allocated space must display the international symbol of accessibility and be outlined with a flush contrasting strip 25 mm wide. On buses (other than dedicated school buses), trams and light rail the space must contain movement of the aid towards the front or sides of the conveyance.
