A removeable gangway between a pontoon and a ferry deck must, across the normal range of tide and freeboard, be long enough to keep its entry and exit points a safe clearance from the quay or pontoon edge and the deck, and have an effective means of mechanically securing both sides. It must carry continuous handrails on both sides at least 1000 mm above the walking surface and at least 800 mm apart (wider where safe and practicable), complying with clause 9(b) of AS 1428.1 (2021), with a consistent finish, 30% luminance contrast wet and dry against the surface and fixed surfaces within 2 m, and a domed warning indicator 4 to 5 mm high and 10 to 12 mm across placed 150 mm before any interruption. Each side must be fenced its full length with upper and intermediate rails, taut ropes or chains or nylon barrier on lockable stanchions no more than 2150 mm apart, with no clear gap over 600 mm between handrail and intermediate rail, toe boards at least 60 mm high where the gap under the lowest rail exceeds 230 mm, and in that case continuous contrasting edge barriers 65 to 75 mm high with at least 800 mm clear between them. Where any part of the walking surface exceeds 1:8 direct assistance must be available. The surface must be slip resistant to clause 4.1 of AS 1428.1 (2021) with a solid contrasting strip 50 to 75 mm wide on the leading edges and any articulation gaps within clause 4.2 of that standard. The gangway must be designed, built and load tested to 5.5 kPa and a 5000 N concentrated load without failure or permanent deformation, and proven safe by a practical trial of boarding and disembarkation across the ferry's likely operating variances.
