A boarding point must have a firm and stable surface on which a boarding device can be safely deployed, and any kerb must stand at least 150 mm above the road. Bus, tram and light rail boarding points installed on or after 13 October 2026 must have a longitudinal gradient no steeper than 1:40 (a gradient matching a steeper road is accepted where a flatter one would prevent safe deployment) and crossfall complying with clause 7.1(d) of AS 1428.1 (2021). For trains, independent boarding must be provided at all accessible doors where possible; otherwise operators and providers must provide a nominated assistance point on the station or platform from which direct assistance to an accessible door can be given, and passengers waiting there must be able to communicate with staff face to face or by a communication device. A car on a train may be marked as accessible only if it gives access to a seat, a priority seat, an allocated space and an accessible version of any other facility on the conveyance, such as a toilet.
