What does 8.7 require?

On buses (other than dedicated school buses), coaches, ferries, trains, trams and light rail a passenger must be given a means of notifying the operator in real time that they need a boarding device to alight. Where that means is a signalling device it must be in an allocated space, have a switch or push button with one surface dimension of at least 25 mm, be operable with one open hand without tight grasping, pinching or wrist twisting, and comply with clauses 10.4.3(c) and 10.4.4 of AS 1428.1 (2021); any buttons need a press force between 2.5 N and 5 N and an integral continuously operating light, and any audio notification system must be linked to a hearing augmentation system. A passenger must also be able to notify the operator that they need a boarding device to board; where this is a signalling device at a premises or infrastructure boarding point it must be positioned to the dimensions in clause 10.4.3 of AS 1428.1 (2021). The alighting device requirements apply to new conveyances and devices installed on or after 13 October 2026.
