A permanently connected changeover device with a centre off position may take the place of the main switch, or of a switch for submains or final subcircuits, so the load can be fed from either source and isolated from both. A manual transfer switch used as a main switch must have a single-action mechanical manual operator (handle, lever, push buttons or similar); touch screens, programmable controls and the like must not be the means of operating it.
