Changeover devices must include a mechanical interlock so the generating set and normal supply cannot be connected at the same time; electrical interlocking is recommended in addition but not required. Exception: where closed transition changeover is permitted the device may lack a mechanical interlock, must be installed to the maker's instructions, and needs a formal agreement with the distributor where the normal supply comes from the distributor.
