In a Class 1a dwelling and in sole-occupancy units of a Class 2 building, the occupant may carry out the smoke and heat alarm routines using the manufacturer's procedure without recording them, unless state or territory regulation says otherwise. Six-monthly: inspect all alarms for dust, paint or other conditions affecting operation, confirm no battery-missing indicator has operated, confirm mains power indicators are lit, activate the test function and confirm the sounder, and inspect other sensory warning devices (these items may be done by occupant or owner without records). Yearly: complete the six-monthly items; test that each interconnected alarm sounds the others; test 100% of smoke alarms and 100% of heat alarms to the manufacturer's instructions; test other sensory warning devices; clean each alarm; replace batteries as the manufacturer requires; replace alarms past their service life date; and inspect spacing and location.
