Section 13 covers the parts of mechanical services that control fire and smoke, installed to the AS 1668, AS 1682 and AS 2665 families of Standards; ventilation with no fire mode role is outside it, although plant that must stop in a fire has to be shown to stop. Where the approved design specifies no fire mode, the relevant requirements do not apply; exit pressurization, smoke control, smoke exhaust and air-handling systems that run in fire mode are in scope, and shutdown-only systems are tested under Clause 13.4.2.8 only. Smoke exhaust, smoke control and exit pressurization systems are tested at least yearly to show they perform to the Standard they were installed to, which means measuring parameters such as doorway velocities, door opening forces and restoration times, differential pressures and exhaust airflow rates. Every fire and smoke control function gets a design and installation survey, including fans that run or stop in fire mode, to confirm occupancy or building or services changes have not compromised performance. Dual duty systems and components (day-to-day and fire mode) and dedicated fire mode systems are both inspected, tested and maintained. Records follow Clause 1.16 and reports Clause 1.17. Frequencies: monthly (kitchen exhausts and outdoor intakes only), three-monthly, six-monthly and yearly (including five-yearly and twenty-five-yearly items).
