People and teams learn to recognise Model I: its governing variables (be in unilateral control of the purpose, maximise winning and minimise losing, suppress negative feelings, be rational and minimise emotion), its action strategies (advocate, evaluate and attribute in ways that discourage inquiry and testing; own and control the task; unilaterally protect self and others, often by easing in and face saving), and its consequences (defensiveness, miscommunication, self-fulfilling and self-sealing processes, escalating error, little public testing, single-loop learning only). Argyris stresses that Model I actions are highly skilled and automatic, which is why people are unaware of them, and that changing a behaviour without changing the Model I values behind it gives transitory, superficial change that reverts under stress.
