Only organisations whose mission is clinical service, education of healthcare professionals or a fiduciary role to patients and the public (and others not otherwise ineligible) may be accredited. Companies whose main business is to make, market, sell, resell or distribute products used in healthcare on or by patients (pharmaceutical and device companies and distributors, proprietary diagnostic labs, compounding pharmacies making proprietary compounds, medical food and supplement sellers, health-wearable manufacturers, pharmacy benefit managers, reagent sellers, regulated bio-medical start-ups and the agencies whose clients are such companies) are ineligible. Subsidiaries of an ineligible parent cannot be accredited; where an eligible parent has an ineligible subsidiary, that subsidiary's owners and employees are excluded. Ineligible companies may not engage in joint providership, and their owners and employees (people legally bound to act in the company's interest, not holders of public shares or fund units) are kept out of planning, teaching and content control except in the Standard 3.2 situations.
