Parts 396 to 399: Inspection, repair and maintenance, hazardous materials driving and parking, and migrant and employee safety – US Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (49 CFR Parts 350 to 399)

US Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (49 CFR Parts 350 to 399) 397.101-113: Routing of Class 7 (radioactive) materials: preferred routes, route plans for highway route controlled quantities, notification and the State routing designations (397.101 to 397.113)

What does 397.101-113 require?

A carrier transporting a highway route controlled quantity of Class 7 material must operate over preferred routes (Interstate System highways and State-designated routes) that reduce time in transit, must prepare a written route plan with the origin, destination, routes, estimated departure and arrival times and telephone numbers for emergencies before departure, give it to the driver and keep it for two years, and must ensure the driver has been trained in the 397 requirements and the route. The carrier must also notify the Nuclear Regulatory Commission or the shipper as required for such shipments, and the States may designate routes under the Subpart D procedures.
