US Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (49 CFR Parts 350 to 399) 396.17-25: Periodic (annual) inspection of every CMV to the Appendix A minimum standards by a qualified inspector, with documentation on or in the vehicle and retained 14 months, inspector qualifications and brake inspector qualifications (396.17 to 396.25)

What does 396.17-25 require?

Every CMV, including each segment of a combination, must pass an inspection at least once every 12 months covering at least the components in Appendix A to Part 396 (brake systems, coupling devices, exhaust, fuel systems, lighting, safe loading, steering, suspension, frame, tires, wheels and rims, windshield glazing and wipers, and motorcoach seats and emergency exits), performed by a person qualified under 396.19 (understanding of the inspection criteria, knowledge and ability from training or experience, with the carrier keeping evidence of the qualification for one year after the inspector ceases to perform inspections), or under an equivalent State or Canadian program. The carrier must keep the original or a copy of the inspection report (identifying the vehicle, the inspector, the date, the components inspected and the result) for 14 months and must carry documentation (the report or a decal) on the vehicle. Brake work and brake inspections must be performed by a person qualified under 396.25 (training program, certification or one year of experience) with records of qualification kept at the location of employment.
