The hours-of-service rules carry specific exceptions a carrier must apply correctly: the adverse driving conditions extension of two hours (395.1(b)), emergency conditions and emergency relief declarations (395.1(b)(2)), driver-salesperson, oilfield operations with waiting time off duty, the short-haul exception for drivers operating within a 150 air-mile radius who return to the work reporting location and are released within 14 hours (no ELD or records of duty status required, but time records must be kept for six months, 395.1(e)), retail store deliveries in the holiday season, the agricultural commodity and farm supply exemption within 150 air miles during planting and harvesting, the utility service vehicle exemption, ground water well drilling, construction materials and equipment, the 16-hour one-day exception for short-haul drivers once in seven days (395.1(o)), and the personal conveyance and yard-move provisions. Each exception has conditions the carrier must document.
