All premises give workers the fire escape routes the circumstances reasonably require, judged by the number of workers and other people expected to be present, properly maintained and kept free of obstruction. Room contents are arranged to leave a free passageway for escape; exit doors from the building and from any room are never locked or fastened so that they cannot be opened easily and immediately from inside, and in workplaces built or converted after the Act commenced exit doors other than sliding doors open outwards; and every window, door or other exit serving as an emergency escape or gives access to one, other than exits in ordinary use, is distinctively marked by a notice in red letters of adequate size; and effective steps make all workers familiar with the means of escape and the routine to follow in a fire. Adequate and suitable means of extinguishing fire are provided, maintained and kept readily accessible; all stocks of highly inflammable substances are held in a fire-resistant store, or somewhere safe outside occupied buildings, sited so as not to endanger escape routes; and the occupier answers for adequate fire preparedness and for the response to any fire on the premises.
