When a misfire is found, the blaster must put safeguards in place to keep all employees out of the danger zone, and no other work may be done there except that needed to remove the misfire hazard, with only the employees needed for that work remaining. Explosives may never be pulled out of a charged or misfired hole; instead the hole receives a fresh primer and is reblasted, or, if refiring would be hazardous, the explosives may be washed out with water, or blown out with air where the misfire is under water. After a misfire with cap and fuse, everyone must keep clear of the charge for a minimum of 1 hour. The person in charge of blasting directs how misfires are dealt with, all wires are carefully traced and a search is made for unexploded charges. No drilling, digging or picking may take place until all missed holes are detonated or the authorized representative approves continuing work.
