A blasting signal code equivalent to Table U-1 must be displayed at one or more conspicuous locations on the operation, every employee must become familiar with it and follow it (Table U-1 sets a warning signal of long blasts lasting 1 minute, sounded 5 minutes before the blast signal; a blast signal of short blasts 1 minute before the shot; and an all clear of one prolonged blast after the blast area is inspected), and danger signs must be placed at suitable locations. Before a blast, the blaster in charge must give a loud warning signal after confirming that surplus explosives have been put somewhere safe and that every employee, vehicle and piece of equipment is a safe distance away or adequately covered. Flagmen must be safely posted on highways passing through the danger zone to stop traffic during blasting. The blaster is responsible for fixing the time of blasting. Before an underground blast, warning must be given, all possible entries to the blast area must be carefully guarded, including the entrances of any working place where a raise, drift or other opening is close to holing through, and the blaster must confirm that all employees have left the blast area before the shot.
