Subpart R applies in full when systems-engineered metal buildings are erected, apart from the column anchorage section (1926.755) and the open web steel joist section (1926.757); the rules below take their place. Each structural column must be anchored by at least four anchor rods. Before hoisting equipment lets go of a rigid frame, half of its bolts, or the manufacturer's specified number if that is higher, must be in place and tight on each side of the web adjacent to every flange. Structural framework may take construction loads only once it is securely bolted, welded or otherwise properly fastened. Where girts or eave struts share connection holes at their frame connections, the first member must keep at least one bolt with a wrench-tight nut unless a seat or similar device supplied by the manufacturer and attached in the field holds it so the girt or eave strut can never be displaced. Every steel or cold-formed joist must be completely bolted and/or welded to its supports at both ends before the hoisting cables come off, before any employee steps onto it and before any construction load goes on it. Purlins and girts may be used as fall arrest anchorages only with a qualified person's written approval. Purlins may be walked or worked on only to install safety systems, once every permanent bridging row is in and with fall protection in use. Any construction load must sit no more than 8 feet from the primary support member's center line.
