Every column must be anchored by at least 4 anchor rods (anchor bolts). Each anchor rod assembly must be designed, together with the weld joining column to base plate and the column's foundation, to resist an eccentric gravity load of 300 pounds or more applied at the shaft top, 18 inches beyond the column's extreme outer face, in each direction. Columns must bear on level finished floors, leveling nuts, shim packs or pre-grouted leveling plates able to transfer construction loads. A competent person must evaluate every column to decide whether guying or bracing is needed, and any needed guying or bracing must be installed. No anchor rod may be repaired, replaced or modified in the field without approval from the project structural engineer of record. Before a column is erected, the controlling contractor must notify the steel erector in writing of any repair, replacement or modification to that column's anchor rods.
