Structural stability must be kept at all times during erection (a note points to Federal Highway Administration rules and AASHTO specifications, including falsework drawings, as relevant for highway bridges). On multi-story structures, permanent floors must be installed as erection progresses with the uppermost permanent floor no more than eight stories below the erection floor; unfinished bolting or welding may not exceed the lesser of four floors or 48 feet above the foundation or the highest permanently secured floor; and a floor that is fully decked or planked, or nets, must be maintained no more than the lesser of two stories or 30 feet directly below any erection work. The first two limits may be exceeded only where the design itself maintains structural integrity. Shear connectors, rebar, threaded studs or deformed anchors may not be fixed to the top flange of a beam, joist or beam attachment, projecting up from or across it, until decking or another walking surface is installed; for composite bridge decks, floors and roofs, shear connectors are laid out and installed after the decking is down, using it as the platform, and never from inside a CDZ. Plumbing-up equipment must be installed with erection when a competent person deems it necessary, be in place before the structure is loaded with joists, decking or bridging bundles, and be removed only with a competent person's approval. Decking bundle packaging and strapping may not be used for hoisting unless designed for it; loose items on bundles must be secured; bundles on joists are landed per 1926.757(e)(4) and on framing so they can be unbanded without being dislodged; decking is secured against displacement at shift end or when conditions require. Framed deck openings have members turned down for continuous decking unless design or constructibility prevents it; holes and openings are decked over, and where size or design prevents that (elevator shafts, stairwells), employees are protected under 1926.760(a)(1); deck holes are cut only immediately before the permanent filling is installed, or are covered at once. Covers must support twice the weight of the workers, equipment and materials that could be on them at once, be secured against displacement by wind, equipment or people, and be painted high-visibility or marked HOLE or COVER; installed skylights and smoke domes count as covers only if they meet that strength. Gaps around columns must be filled with wire mesh, exterior plywood or equivalent strong enough to protect people and stop falling objects. Except as allowed in 1926.760(c), decking is laid tightly and secured immediately, with panels placed on full support. Derrick floors must be fully decked or planked with connections completed for the intended load, and temporary loads on them spread to avoid local overload.
