Subpart I: Tools - Hand and Power – OSHA Safety and Health Regulations for Construction (29 CFR Part 1926)

OSHA Safety and Health Regulations for Construction (29 CFR Part 1926) 1926.305: 1926.305 Jacks, lever and ratchet, screw, and hydraulic

Every lever and ratchet, screw or hydraulic jack must show the manufacturer's rated capacity legibly, and that capacity may not be exceeded. Each jack needs a positive stop so it cannot overtravel. Where a firm foundation is needed, the jack base is blocked or cribbed, and a wood block is placed between the jack's metal cap and the load wherever the cap could slip. As soon as a load has been raised it must be cribbed, blocked or otherwise secured. Hydraulic jacks exposed to freezing temperatures must be filled with a suitable antifreeze liquid, and all jacks are to be lubricated at regular intervals. Each jack must be thoroughly inspected at times set by its service conditions, and never less often than: once every 6 months for jacks used constantly or intermittently at one location; when sent out of the shop for special work and again when it comes back; and immediately before and immediately after it is subjected to abnormal load or shock. Repair and replacement parts are examined for defects, and a jack that is out of order is tagged as such and kept out of use until repaired. Paragraph (b) is reserved.
