Each fixed power-driven woodworking tool needs a disconnect switch capable of being locked out or tagged out in the off setting. Circular saws larger than 20 inches in diameter, or running above 10,000 peripheral feet per minute, must have their operating speed etched or otherwise permanently marked on the blade; a marked saw may only be run at the marked speed, and if it is retensioned for another speed the marking is corrected. Where the work allows it, machines are fitted with automatic feeding devices, and feed rolls and other moving parts of feeder attachments are covered or guarded against operator contact. Every portable power-driven circular saw needs a guard both over and under the shoe or base plate: the upper one covers the blade to tooth depth except the minimum arc needed to tilt the base for bevel cuts, the lower guard covers to tooth depth except the minimum arc for retraction and contact with the work, and the lower guard must return automatically and instantly to cover the blade when the saw is withdrawn. Any PPE provided must conform to subpart E. All woodworking tools and machinery must also meet the applicable parts of ANSI 01.1-1961 for woodworking machinery. Radial saws: the upper hood fully encloses the upper part of the blade as far down as the end of the saw arbor, is built to shield the operator from broken teeth and flying splinters and to throw sawdust away from the operator, and the sides of the lower exposed blade are guarded to the full blade diameter by a device that adjusts itself to stock thickness and stays in contact with the stock. Hand-fed crosscut table saws need a hood meeting the ripsaw hood rules. Hand-fed circular ripsaws need a hood that completely encloses the part of the blade above the table and above the material, self-adjusts to and stays in contact with the material without much resistance to feeding, is strong enough for normal knocks and handling, protects against splinters and broken teeth, is made of material soft enough not to break teeth, and is mounted so it works reliably, stays aligned with the blade and resists side thrust.
