Chapter 4: Understanding the risk from loss of supply – NHS England HTM 06-01 Electrical Services Supply and Distribution (2017 Edition)

NHS England HTM 06-01 Electrical Services Supply and Distribution (2017 Edition) 4.4-4.17: Risk grading of areas for loss of supply (clinical A to E, business I to IV)

Risk of losing supply is assessed as clinical risk and non-clinical business continuity risk. Designers and stakeholders should consult clinical and technical staff through the Electrical Safety Group to assess each department's susceptibility to total or partial loss of supply, with patient mobility, dependency and continuity of treatment the most critical factors. Consequence grows with the patient's dependence on supply and with the length and extent of the failure. The Group is responsible for setting the range of grades used; the five clinical grades and four business grades are a guide that may be simplified or extended, and the higher grade for an area drives its infrastructure strategy.
