Support services are assessed on the same basis as clinical risk. Grade IV (finance, stores, laundry, workshops): a single-conversion UPS may allow IT to shut down safely and load management may help for outages over 4 h. Grade III (life safety and security systems): battery packs or UPS under the relevant standards, with an understanding of their maintenance and capacity. Grade II (HVAC, hot water, energy centres, BEMS): a single-conversion UPS should allow safe shutdown of computer systems, and load management should be considered where loss of, say, chilled water would raise space temperatures unacceptably. Grade I (sterile services, laboratories, records, physiotherapy): a single-conversion UPS is recommended for safe shutdown, and load management may help for outages over about 2 h.
