Because learning means facing differences (between novice and expert, old and new beliefs, one's own and others' values), the space must encourage the expression of differences and give the psychological safety to face them, blending challenge and support. Kolb notes institutions are better at challenging than at supporting, and that support is a climate that learners can rely on to sustain them for the long haul, a hospitable space welcoming the stranger in which learners and teachers communicate without fear; learning is shadowed by hopes and fears of failing or looking foolish, and the educator's task is to help learners overcome fear and act with courage.
