Learning starts from what learners already know, believe and have experienced about the subject, because new understanding is constructed from prior understanding and prior knowledge cannot simply be overwritten by explanation. Many learners do not believe their experience counts; the educator helps them own and value it, explores it, and uses related concrete experiences so that learners can look again at how they made sense of things before and adjust it as new ideas arrive.
