Procedures ensure that PT items are produced according to the scheme plan and are fit for the scheme's purpose, and that all items are appropriately selected, acquired, collected, identified, prepared, handled, stored and, where required, disposed of; items usually match the materials met in routine laboratory work. Where participants must sample, prepare or manipulate an item and submit it to the provider, the provider issues instructions covering preparation, any applicable environmental conditions, and how the item is packaged, handled, stored and shipped.
