For work organization: more say over how and at what pace work is done (flexible hours, job sharing, consultation), breaks to manage fatigue and limits on out-of-hours calls and email, consultation on change, clear roles, reporting lines and performance expectations, task priorities with flexible deadlines, matching tasks to competence, less isolated work or better social support, good supervision and feedback, better attitudes to reporting stress, bullying, harassment and violence, and extra help at peak times. For social factors: awareness and clear reporting routes, early reporting encouraged through a respectful, confidential climate, support for affected workers, policies setting expected behaviour and how misconduct is dealt with, instructions for foreseeable risks and post-incident help, training to spot early signs of stress and ill health, access to occupational health, debriefing, counselling and mediation, information on rights and duties, recognition of effort, culture programmes, and safe support services for victims of violence and harassment. For environment, equipment and tasks: better equipment and surroundings, barriers or other protection against violence, and protective equipment where higher-order controls cannot reduce the risk enough. Workers are helped to recognize signs of exposure in individuals or groups: behaviour change, withdrawal, absence or working while ill, disengagement, low energy, turnover, poor or late work, avoiding others, conflict and bullying, and rising incidents or errors.
