Clause 5: Recognizing social responsibility and engaging stakeholders – ISO 26000:2010

ISO 26000:2010 5.2.2: Recognizing the core subjects and relevant issues of social responsibility

What does 5.2.2 require?

An organization should get to know the issues under the seven core subjects (human rights, the environment, labour practices, consumer issues, fair operating practices, community involvement and development, and the governance of the organization). It should: work through every core subject to find which issues bear on its decisions and activities, along with the linked actions and expectations, since each core subject is relevant to every organization although each issue may not be; after identifying issues, assess how significant its impacts are, both for the stakeholders affected and for sustainable development; consider how it interacts with other organizations and affects stakeholders; take into account its legally binding duties (laws, regulations and enforceable contracts) and commitments it has given in codes of conduct, guidelines or through membership of associations; and treat this recognition as ongoing, judging possible impacts while new activities are still being planned and reviewing current activities when needed.
