To deal with its social responsibility, an organization should grasp three relationships. First, between itself and society: understanding and acknowledging the effects its decisions and activities have on society and the environment, and what society expects of it by way of responsible conduct regarding those effects, seen through the core subjects and issues. Second, between itself and its stakeholders: knowing which people or groups have interests its decisions and activities could touch. Third, between stakeholders and society: understanding that the interests of stakeholders affected by the organization may not match what society expects (a supplier wants to be paid, while society wants contracts kept, two viewpoints on one issue). All three should be taken into account together.
