IEC 61508:2010 - Functional Safety of E/E/PE Safety-related Systems 2-7.4.11: Part 2, 7.4.11 Additional requirements for data communications

Where a safety function relies on data communication, the failure measure of the communication process (for example the residual error rate) is estimated considering corruption, repetition, deletion, insertion, wrong sequence, delay, masquerade and transmission errors, and included in the safety function's random failure measure. The techniques securing that failure measure follow this standard and Part 3, either by designing and validating the whole channel to the IEC 61508 series per IEC 62280 or IEC 61784-3 (white channel), or, where parts of the channel are not so developed (black channel), by implementing the measures in the safety-related subsystems or elements at each end of the channel in line with IEC 62280 or IEC 61784-3.
