Hersey & Blanchard Situational Leadership Model S2: Selling or Coaching: high task, high relationship

What does S2 require?

For readiness level 2 (still unable, but trying: willing or confident) the leader keeps providing most of the direction, because ability is still missing, and adds support for the follower's motivation and commitment. What separates selling from telling is dialogue: the leader explains decisions, including why, and gives the follower the chance to ask questions and get clarification so that the follower buys in psychologically; the decision stays with the leader. Other descriptors are explaining, persuading and clarifying. In SLII the Coaching leader explains why, asks for suggestions, praises behaviour that is approximately right and keeps directing the task.
