Hersey & Blanchard Situational Leadership Model S1: Telling or Directing: high task, low relationship

What does S1 require?

For readiness level 1 on a task the leader gives a lot of guidance and little supportive behaviour: specific instructions and close supervision of performance, telling the follower what, where and how. Decisions are made by the leader. Other descriptors are guiding, directing and structuring; in SLII the Directing leader sets out goals precisely, demonstrates and explains how to do the work, and follows performance closely to give frequent feedback. Low relationship does not mean unfriendly: the leader simply spends more time directing than supporting while the follower cannot yet perform, and adds support only once the follower begins to show the ability (the move from telling to selling). S1 is also the style for a real crisis, to be used for crises, not to create them.
