Hersey & Blanchard Situational Leadership Model
Performance readiness and development levels (R1 to R4, D1 to D4) – Hersey & Blanchard Situational Leadership Model

Hersey & Blanchard Situational Leadership Model R1: Unable and unwilling or insecure (SLII D1 Enthusiastic Beginner: low competence, high commitment)

What does R1 require?

Situational Leadership R1: the follower lacks the ability for the task and either lacks commitment and motivation (unable and unwilling) or lacks confidence (unable and insecure); the matched style is S1 Telling. SLII D1, the enthusiastic beginner: new to the goal or task and inexperienced, but eager, optimistic and willing to take direction, with confidence based on hope and transferable skills rather than evidence, so the person may not know what they do not know; matched with S1 Directing. The lineages disagree on willingness at this level: the CLS white paper argues that enthusiasm on joining says nothing about task-specific readiness.
