The leader prompts followers to be creative and innovative through challenging assumptions, recasting problems and tackling familiar situations from fresh angles. Creativity is expected; individual mistakes are never criticized in public; followers' ideas and solutions are sought and followers are included in solving problems; new approaches are encouraged and an idea is not faulted merely for differing from what the leader thinks; attention goes to the what of a problem rather than the who to blame. Followers in turn challenge the leader's settled assumptions, and nothing is too established to be questioned. Interviewees saw it in leaders who encouraged intuition, entertained ideas that seemed silly at first, asked people to rework problems they thought solved, saw unusual patterns and used humour to provoke new thinking.
