Leadership is idealized when followers want to identify with the leader and emulate the leader: the leader is admired, respected and trusted, and in the authors' interviews charisma was attributed to leaders who set an example, showed determination and exceptional ability, took risks, created a sense of empowerment and of a joint mission, showed dedication to the cause, handled crises with radical solutions and engendered faith in others. In the MLQ this attributed side is its own scale, the charisma followers ascribe (with close emotional ties and trust built on perceived power and a focus on higher-order ideals), distinct from the behaviours that earn it. Identification is what drives followers toward the vision, and in the true form followers still question the leader.
