The behaviours through which a leader earns idealized credit: putting others' needs ahead of personal needs and sacrificing personal gain for others, sharing risks with followers, being consistent rather than arbitrary, doing the right thing when it is hard and holding to demanding moral and ethical standards, using power only when needed and never for personal gain but to move people toward the mission, and acting from principles and standards that make the leader predictable (so the same leader can be demanding with some and supportive with others within a principled range). In the MLQ this is the behavioural scale, stressing a mission and values held in common and acting on them.
