The leader motivates and inspires by giving meaning and challenge to followers' work: arousing team spirit, displaying enthusiasm and optimism, involving followers in envisioning attractive (sometimes very different) future states, communicating expectations followers want to meet and showing commitment to the goals and to the vision followers share. In the authors' interviews inspirational leadership meant giving work meaning and challenge, describing a hopeful future, shaping expectations that fulfil themselves, looking ahead and moving first, frequently at risk to oneself (leading ahead of followers as well as with them). The leader inspires by what is said, by what is done and, at the top of the range, by both.
