Annex II: Essential health and safety requirements – EU ATEX Directive (Directive 2014/34/EU)

EU ATEX Directive (Directive 2014/34/EU) EHSR-1.2.5-9: Additional protection against external stresses, safe opening, other hazards, overload prevention and flameproof enclosures

What does EHSR-1.2.5-9 require?

Products exposed to certain external stresses must, where needed, have additional protection and withstand those stresses without harm to explosion protection. Housings or locked containers that form part of the explosion protection must be openable only with a special tool or under suitable protective measures. Designs must avoid injury from direct or indirect contact, dangerous surface temperatures of accessible parts or radiation, non-electrical dangers known from experience, and dangerous situations from foreseeable overload (these other-hazard aspects fall away where other Union law covers them). Dangerous overloading must be prevented at the design stage by integrated measuring, regulating and control devices such as over-current cut-outs, temperature limiters, differential pressure switches, flowmeters, time-lag relays and overspeed monitors. Where parts able to ignite an atmosphere are placed in an enclosure, the enclosure must withstand an internal explosion and prevent its transmission to the surrounding atmosphere.
