Equipment and protective systems must be designed on the principle of integrated explosion safety: first, where possible, prevent the product itself from forming or releasing an explosive atmosphere; next, prevent ignition, considering every electrical and non-electrical ignition source; and if an explosion still occurs and could endanger people, domestic animals or property, halt it at once or limit the range of flames and pressure to a sufficient level of safety. Design and manufacture must follow an analysis of possible operating faults so as to preclude dangerous situations as far as possible, taking account of misuse that can reasonably be anticipated.
