Working hours must meet national law, collective agreements and sub-clauses 6.2 to 6.6, whichever gives workers more protection; those sub-clauses rest on international labour standards. Normal hours, overtime excluded, shall be set in the contract and shall be no more than 48 a week. Overtime shall always be voluntary and shall be used responsibly, considering how much, how often and how many hours individual workers and the workforce overall are working; it shall not take the place of regular employment, and it shall always be paid at a premium, recommended to be at least 125% of the normal rate. Total hours in any seven days shall not go above 60, except that under 6.5 they may do so in exceptional circumstances only where national law allows it, it is permitted by a collective agreement that was freely negotiated with a workers' organisation speaking for a significant part of the workforce, suitable safeguards are in place for the health and safety of the workers, and the employer can demonstrate that the circumstances really are exceptional, for example an unforeseen peak in production, an accident or an emergency. Workers shall have at least one day off in each seven-day period or, where national law permits, two days off in each fourteen-day period.
