EPA RCRA Hazardous Waste Management
Part 262 Subpart A: Generator determination, category and accumulation – EPA RCRA Hazardous Waste Management

EPA RCRA Hazardous Waste Management 262.15: § 262.15 Satellite accumulation area regulations for small and large quantity generators

An SQG or LQG may accumulate up to 55 gallons of non-acute hazardous waste and/or one quart of liquid or 1 kg of solid acute hazardous waste (261.31 or 261.33(e)) in containers at or near the point of generation, under the control of the process operator, without a permit, if: a leaking or damaged container is immediately transferred to a sound container or to a central accumulation area; containers are compatible with the waste; incompatible wastes are not mixed in a container or put in an unwashed container that held an incompatible material unless 265.17(b) is met, and incompatible containers are separated or protected; containers stay closed except when adding, removing or consolidating waste or when temporary venting is needed for equipment operation or to prevent dangerous pressure; containers are marked or labelled "Hazardous Waste" with an indication of the hazards (characteristic, DOT label or placard, OSHA HazCom statement or pictogram, or NFPA 704 label). When the volume limits are exceeded, within three consecutive calendar days the generator must either comply with the central accumulation rules (262.16(b) or 262.17(a)) or move the excess to a central accumulation area, an on-site permitted or interim status facility or an off-site designated facility, continuing to meet the container conditions and marking the excess container with the date the excess began. SQG satellite areas must meet the preparedness and emergency procedures of 262.16(b)(8) and (9); LQG satellite areas must meet Subpart M.
