Allowances and restrictions on consuming data are documented in data sharing agreements as the organization's policies require; every data access request carries metadata stating the intended use; each data element requested can be traced to an authoritative source; reporting tracks use of authoritative sources and governs use of non-authoritative ones; and catalog metadata is exploited to automate provisioning and consumption. Automation depends on rich catalog metadata and a taxonomy of access conditions, allowances and restrictions; provisioning and consumption APIs integrated with the catalog enforce consumption from authorized sources (optionally blocking non-authoritative consumption), log access events in fine detail for audit, and keep lineage metadata current.
