Data management policy defines and mandates the data owner role and its responsibilities and extends them to data hosted in cloud environments, including new data types the cloud providers generate (such as API and application logs). The organization determines which owner responsibilities weigh more for cloud-resident data (for example sovereignty) and defines the technology support each responsibility needs from the provider. The owner is a senior business executive with authority to act, answerable for what a data set or domain means and contains, and for its quality, storage and distribution; execution may be delegated to data stewards and the delegation is part of the role definition. Ownership always stays with the organization, never with the cloud provider, and does not change when data moves between providers.
