Codex General Principles of Food Hygiene (CXC 1-1969, Rev. 2022) 13.2.5: 13.2.5 Physical contamination

Systems throughout the food chain prevent contamination by foreign materials, especially hard or sharp objects (jewellery, glass, metal fragments, bone, plastic, wood) that could injure or choke. In manufacturing and processing this includes equipment maintenance and regular inspection, suitably calibrated detection or screening devices where necessary (metal detectors, X-ray), and procedures for staff to follow when breakages of glass or plastic containers occur.
