An employee on a qualifying distant job may go home for a weekend after 2 months' continuous service and then every 3 months (plumbing and mechanical services) or every 2 months (sprinkler fitters). The employer must pay the bus or return rail fare to the station nearest the employee's home on the pay day after they come back, provided no delay the employer has not agreed to affects their start on the next working day. This does not apply if the job will end within another 28 days (or 14 days for sprinkler fitters) after the qualifying period. The entitlement should be used as soon as reasonably practicable and lapses 2 months after it falls due only if the employer notified the employee in writing, in the week before it fell due, of the due date and of the lapse; the employer bears the burden of proving that notice. Absences provided for in 21.10(e) do not break continuous service.
