An employee sent, selected or engaged to go to a qualifying distant job does not receive the 21.9 fares and travel allowances for the trip from home, but must be paid: travel time paid at the ordinary hourly rate for a maximum of 8 hours on each day of travel (measured by rail or usual transport); the fare on the most common public transport (bus, air, or rail with a sleeping berth if needed) plus any excess for carrying tools; and each meal while travelling at the amount in clause 21.10(d)(i) of the current award (consolidated to 16 September 2026, read 30 September 2026). The employer may recover the forward fare from an employee who leaves within 2 weeks of starting on the job and does not promptly go back to their place of engagement.
